BIO
Born 1987, Switzerland. Lives and works in New York, USA.
Yves Scherer is a Swiss-born, New York–based artist whose multidisciplinary practice explores the complex interplay of celebrity, digital culture, and personal narrative. By seamlessly blending sculpture, painting, photography, and large-scale installation, Scherer's work offers a poignant commentary on how identity is constructed and mediated in the modern world. His unique approach and compelling subject matter have established him as a significant voice in contemporary art, attracting a global audience of collectors and institutions.
Scherer's art is deeply rooted in pop cultural references and fanfiction, blurring the lines between private life and public spectacle. He often incorporates figures like Emma Watson and Kate Moss, not as portraits, but as archetypes that represent broader societal obsessions with fame, fantasy, and media. Through these figures, he examines themes of intimacy, nostalgia, and resilience.
His work often features recurring motifs such as angels, icons, and childhood objects, which act as symbols of memory and desire. These elements are presented through a variety of materials, including bronze, onyx, and reflective surfaces, creating tactile environments that are both vulnerable and spectacular. This balance between raw emotion and polished form is a hallmark of his artistic vision.
Yves Scherer holds a BA in Sciences of Culture from the University of Lucerne and an MA in Sculpture from the Royal College of Art, London. He lives and works in New York.
His work has been featured in exhibitions at major institutions, including Kunsthalle Basel, ICA London, Swiss Institute New York, and Kunsthaus Grenchen. He has also held solo exhibitions at leading galleries such as Peres Projects (Seoul), Galería Mascota (Mexico City), The Journal Gallery (New York & Los Angeles), and Galerie Eva Presenhuber (New York).
Scherer received the Swiss Art Award at Art Basel in 2015 and was included in Forbes’ 30 Under 30 Art & Design list in 2016. His works are held in the public collections of the Farnsworth Art Museum (Rockland), Portland Museum of Art (Maine), Kunstmuseum Olten, and Kunsthaus Grenchen.
Across media, Scherer’s practice reflects on intimacy, nostalgia, and resilience, often using reflective surfaces and recurring motifs of angels, icons, and childhood objects to explore the intersections of memory, desire, and mediated experience.
