In Daisy Daze, Charlie Roberts turns a single flower into a stage for transformation, disguise, and quiet humor. A caterpillar climbs the stem, another rests on the yellow heart of the bloom, and a pair of small legs dangles beneath the petals. It’s hard to tell what we’re really looking at. Has the caterpillar shed its disguise and become the reclining figure, or is this simply a daydream about metamorphosis?
The scene recalls the natural symbolism of early Renaissance still lifes and the anthropomorphic play of Surrealism, but Roberts approaches it with the lightness of a storyteller rather than a moralist. His daisy, with its cartoon clarity and tactile, hand-carved frame, becomes both a devotional image and a gentle parody of one.
Daisy Daze balances between whimsy and philosophy. It’s about transformation, certainly, but also about play, imagination, and the pleasure of not needing to decide what’s real.

Charlie Roberts (b. 1983, Kansas, USA. Lives and works in Oslo, Norway) is an American-born artist whose work spans painting, sculpture, and works on paper. Known for his vibrant compositions and elongated figures, he draws on sources ranging from folk art and medieval painting to hip-hop, comics, and art history. Roberts’ imagery often merges the everyday with the fantastical, creating scenes that feel both ancient and contemporary. His work balances humor and sincerity, craftsmanship and spontaneity, resulting in a distinctly personal and joyful visual language.
