BIO

Born 1983, Kansas, USA. Lives and works in Oslo, Norway.

Charlie Roberts is an American-born, Oslo-based artist whose multidisciplinary practice spans painting, sculpture, and works on paper. Known for his elongated figures, vibrant palettes, and densely layered compositions, Roberts merges influences from pop culture, hip-hop, folk art, and art history to create a playful yet complex visual language. His work navigates the space between the everyday and the fantastical, establishing him as a distinctive voice in contemporary painting and sculpture.

Roberts’s practice is deeply rooted in cultural sampling, blurring the boundaries between classical traditions and modern references. His paintings often present crowded interiors or narrative scenes in which perspectives and motifs overlap, echoing the improvisational rhythm of hip-hop. Elongated figures, stylized gestures, and dense fields of pattern create compositions that feel both timeless and immediate, humorous and tender.

Recurring themes in Roberts’s work include domestic life, cultural memory, and the intersection of intimacy and spectacle. In addition to painting, he works across sculpture, ceramics, and carved wooden reliefs, extending his interest in folk traditions and handcraft while maintaining the spontaneity and energy that mark his visual language.

Roberts studied at Kansas University in Lawrence and the Emily Carr Institute of Art & Design in Vancouver. He lives and works in Oslo, Norway.

His work has been presented in solo exhibitions at institutions and galleries across Europe and North America, including Trafo Kunsthall (Oslo), Galleri Magnus Karlsson (Stockholm), David Risley Gallery (Copenhagen), Richard Heller Gallery (Los Angeles), and Anna Zorina Gallery (New York). He has also been featured in group exhibitions and international art fairs, and his works are held in notable private and public collections.

Across media, Roberts’s practice reflects a fascination with storytelling, memory, and cultural hybridity. By combining the rhythm of hip-hop with the traditions of painting and sculpture, he invites viewers into a world where references collide and new forms of meaning are constantly created.
